The Christmas lights that the town hall of Sevilla installed
downtown and in the main commercial streets will begin on November
29 this year, a few days early, in hopes of encouraging commerce and shopping, in order to strengthen
the brand of Sevilla as a Christmas tourist destination.
The estimated cost for the Christmas lights this year comes to €447,750
and has numerous additions compared with last year. First, 26 new streets will be
illuminated, in addition to so many others that the districts and neighborhood
commercial associations decide to
decorate.
The Plaza del Salvador will have a new illumination system
that has been copied from one installed in the Coven Garden in London
in 2008. There will be an original illumination made of LEDs that will be constantly moving and that will cover the whole plaza.
The Avenida de la Constitución will also change. Because the
town hall, according to Maximiliano Vílchez, has decided to replace the decorations
from last year and exchange them for ones inspired by the stained-glass windows of
the cathedral and the azucenas
(Madonna lilys) of the Giralda.
Additionally, there will be an uninterrupted trail of
Christmas lights between the Prado and the Barqueta. The mapping [the article said mapping, I assume it means setting up the lights all over town] will also
continue to be celebrated as a public spectacle between December 19 and January
5, in a distinct and innovative performance and with new technical resources.
